Our Rediscovering D.C. explorations take us to an unusual or overlooked corner of the District of Columbia every second month.

This month, we will join Anacostia River Explorers to learn about the Anacostia River’s history, wildlife, the environmental threats it faces, and the solutions helping it realize its full potential.  The free water tour provides a combination of waterside views of the rapidly developing Navy Yard with rarely-seen secluded upstream sections of the river (including Kingman Island).

A shorter (one-hour) version of the river tour will be offered on Monday, October 28, at 11 am
The river tour will be in an open boat, please plan for significant sun and wind exposure.

Did you Know?

The Anacostia, by contrast to the Potomac, was originally an extremely deep river, with a 40' navigable channel.  It was this deep channel that the British Navy used in 1814 to reach Bladensburg then march back to Washington and set the White House and Capitol alight.
